Hello Disc Golfers

I’m Jack the traveling course critic. I don’t think I’ll be doing much actual criticizing in the sense of having overly negative things to say about the courses I visit; rather, I’ll be confirming again and again that playing any course for the first time is an adventure, and that disc golfers around the world are almost unequivocally friendly and helpful.

Let’s see . . . I’ve played courses in Michigan, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Arizona, Texas, and of course my home state of California. There may be a couple I’m forgetting right now, but I don’t think so. I’ve played an Am Worlds (12th place) and a Pro Worlds (you don’t wanna know), and numerous other tournaments. But I still get the most enjoyment simply discovering new courses, searching for gems. Whenever I travel, for any reason, I try to find courses in the area on discgolf.com and squeeze at least one round in. I get pictures when I can, and usually come away with at least a couple tidbits that’ll help the next traveler to visit the course. Those tidbits and stories about the people I meet will comprise most of these columns.

For instance, a recent trip took me through Spokane Washington and Portland Oregon. I got the chance to play two course I hadn’t played before, Timber Park in Estacada, near Portland, and Downriver DGC in Spokane. The directions to both on the web were sufficient for me to find the courses, and the course markings to get from hole-to-hole were better than average at Downriver, but a little lacking at Timber ( due to, I found out, some recent re-arranging).

-THIS MONTH-

La Mirada Park, LA Area, CA

Until next time, happy trails from the traveling disc golf critic.
